The Cosmo Cocktail

When speaking about modern classics in the cocktail world, few can deny the Cosmopolitan’s status as such.

A drink so widely popularized a reinvented, some bar menus don’t even have the Cosmopolitan on the menu because, as The Vancouver Sun points out -

“Everyone knows what they are, and bartenders all know how to make them.”

This zesty, refreshing, pink cocktail is a staple in every “girls night out”, and has been widely popularized in pop culture through the likes of HBO hit TV series “Sex in the City”, and even Madonna herself.

The Origin of The Cosmo

The most popular origin of the Cosmopolitan as we know it today comes from none other than the high-rolling city of Miami.

Cheryl Cook, a bartender also known as the “Martini Queen of South Beach” wanted to give the classic Martini a twist that would make it more appealing to women. Cook blended Absolut Citron, a new product at the time, Rose’s Lime, a popular triple-sec, and cranberry juice to achieve the cocktail’s distinct pinkish hue and Cheryl Cook's Cosmo was born!

The next important evolution of the Cosmopolitan started with Dale “King Cocktail” DeGroff, sampling the Fog City Diner’s cocktail in San Francisco. DeGroff put his own spin on the drink at the Rainbow Room in New York.

This version of the Cosmopolitan substituted Absolut Citron, Rose’s Lime, and cranberry juice in favor of Cointreau, fresh lime juice, and a flamed orange peel.

According to an account from the Museum of the American Cocktail, this spin on the Cosmopolitan reached new heights when paparazzi caught Madonna holding a glass at a Grammy party.

Due to the ever-growing diversification of gender roles, no longer is the Cosmopolitan constrained as just a “lady’s drink”. The strong yet refreshing flavor, as well as the simplicity, make this cocktail a treat for anyone, regardless of gender.
