Swim Trunk Length: How to Choose Your Inseam
The inseam of swim trunks is the length of the inner leg seam, measured from the crotch to the hem. It is different from the total length down the outside. Use the same measurement when comparing a pair you like with a new model.

Three useful length ranges
- Short: a 3–5 inch inseam, about 7.6–12.7 cm.
- Mid-length: a 6–7 inch inseam, about 15.2–17.8 cm.
- Longer: an 8–9 inch inseam or more, about 20.3–22.9 cm or more.
These are general comparison ranges, not measurements for every product. The position of the hem also depends on the rise, cut and your proportions. Height alone does not determine the right length.
Measure a pair you already enjoy wearing
- Lay the shorts flat without stretching them.
- Measure along the inner leg seam from the crotch to the hem.
- Compare that measurement with the same measurement in the new model’s size guide.
Check the waist and hip measurements too. A familiar inseam gives you a starting point, but a different rise or leg width can change the fit.
Try the fit in motion
Walk, sit and bend your legs while trying the shorts on. Check that the waistband stays comfortable and the leg openings and lining allow movement. Choose the amount of coverage you enjoy: shorter is not automatically better for sport, and longer is not automatically more comfortable.
Style the length you prefer
A plain T-shirt gives a bold print room to stand out; an open lightweight shirt adds another layer. Match your footwear and outfit to the setting, and check whether beachwear suits the occasion.
